Your Energy Efficiency Problem Could Also Be a Pest Problem

With the increasing frequency of heat waves in summer and some surprisingly cool winter air, it’s become more important than ever to have an energy efficient home. On hot days, the more cool air leaves your property, the more your AC has to work and the more expensive your energy bill. On cold days, many properties – especially those running a gas furnace – often spend hundreds or thousands of dollars trying to keep the room warm.

The more expensive your energy bills are, the more likely your home has an energy efficiency problem. Now, we’re a pest control company. Energy efficiency is not our specialty. But one thing that we do know is that properties that have energy efficiency problems often struggle with other issues – most notably, pest problems.

What is the Relationship Between Energy Efficiency and Pests?

There are many possible causes of poor energy efficiency. Homes with poor insulation, for example, are more likely to have energy efficiency issues, as are those with a poorly working air conditioner or those with single pane windows.

But energy efficiency issues can be, and often are, caused by air leaks. These leaks may be found under doors, around windows, through the attic, and all around the home. Those air leaks cause the temperature from your HVAC to leak outside while the outside temperature leaks inside, reducing your energy efficiency.

Those same leaks also serve as entrance points for pests. When you have energy efficiency issues, it often means that you are at an increased risk of pest invasions. Pests can sense those temperature changes. They use the holes to enter your property, and the more holes you have, the more likely you’ll have pests that can fit through them:

  • Ants
  • Spiders
  • Earwigs
  • Centipedes
  • Cockroaches

Pests take advantage of every entrance point on your property, and when you have energy efficiency issues – especially those you cannot explain – it almost always means that pest issues are sure to follow. Protect your property from pests with regular pest control from Adapt Pest Management.
