Earwigs get their name from the myth that they climb inside a person’s ears all the way to the brain. Luckily, this is no more than a myth. But while your ears and brains are safe, your plants might not be as earwigs can be an aggressive garden pest.
In the Roseville, Rocklin, and Greater Sacramento area, earwigs are a common pest all year long. They find their way into residential and commerical properties, slipping through the smallest of spaces and hiding under any area with a bit of moisture or warmth. ADAPT Pest Management is a family owned and operated pest control company based in Roseville, with removal and prevention services for earwigs through our bi-monthly pest control. If earwigs are a common issue around your home or business, get started with ongoing pest control by calling us at 916-755-6555.
Characteristics of Earwigs in Roseville
Also known as “pincher bugs” for their unique set of pincers that protrude from their abdomens, earwigs are commonly dark brown or black in color. They have wings as well, but not all species can fly. Those who can are not typically agile fliers either, so these insects are most commonly found on the ground.
Earwigs stay mostly outside where they can collect in large groups due to the pheromones they produce. They might come inside during cooler months or hot, dry weather and will often be found in areas with high moisture, like bathrooms or kitchens. It is rare to have an infestation inside the house, and you will instead see only one or two, but usually if you see a couple that means that many more are hiding elsewhere in difficult to find places.
Challenges Caused by Earwigs
Earwigs pose no threat to humans. In general, earwigs consume decaying plant matter, such as dead leaves and compost. Some will eat smaller insects as well. These species are largely beneficial to gardens.
An earwig can bite a person, although this happens extremely rarely and is considered harmless. A bit more common but still unlikely is that an earwig will use its pincers to pinch skin. The force behind the pinch can sometimes be enough to break skin, but often results in a red mark and a small amount of swelling for a few hours. There is no risk of disease or bacteria spreading from an earwig.
The biggest problem with earwigs is that they are, for lack of a better term, “gross,” and the presence one earwig often means you’re going to run into another, and another, and another, as new earwigs will come in using the same entrance points. So if you have earwigs, it’s a sign that you need immediate pest control to prevent future invasions, and also to prevent other pests from using the same entrance points.
Bi-Monthly Pest Control to Eliminate Earwigs
While earwigs are not an especially risky pest, they still don’t belong inside your home. We manage earwigs along with other pests through regular, bi-monthly pest control. These routine services make it possible to consistently provide the right solutions to eliminate pests. We bring together our pest control training with our observations at your home, resulting in treatments that precisely match your needs.
With visits every other month, we monitor changes around the exterior of your home. We take note of shifting pest populations and new risks. Sometimes these are due to changing weather conditions. Other times, they are indicative of a larger problem. We are able to identify these problems early and take rapid steps to fix them.
Depending on what we discover during the inspection, we make a plan for treatment. This takes into account where earwigs and other pests are on the property. We then use applications that are:
- Nontoxic
- Long Lasting
- Effective
- Eco-Friendly
We apply treatments to the perimeter of your property to create an invisible but effective barrier that will work against pests for several weeks.
