What Pests Can You Eat?

At ADAPT Pest, our goal is to provide your home with ongoing pest control that prevents insects from entering your property and eliminates any that are currently present. We know how unpleasant and potentially dangerous pests can be, which is why we use a range of different effective solutions to provide your property with the pest control it needs to stay free of bugs all year.

But what if you’re like… Really, really hungry?

Insects are, for better or worse, some of the most protein and nutrient rich foods available in the world today. They require almost no water to grow, can be bred in abundance, and eating them has almost no environmental impact. Some people say they taste good.

The reason we don’t eat them is that it’s gross. Very gross. Arguably one of the grossest things we can eat.

To be fair, that feeling is mostly cultural. They eat insects in many other countries. Some places cook them in ways that can be considered delicacies. The UN thinks that insects may be one of the most important foods for the survival of the human race if other forms of food become too difficult or wasteful to grow.

Still, you know… Gross.

But if you’re curious about what pests you can eat, the answer is: most of them.

While it’s not necessarily recommended that you catch some pests in your yard and shove them in your mouth, since nobody really knows where those pests have been, you can eat the vast majority of non-toxic, non-waste eating insects, including:

  • Crickets
  • Grasshoppers
  • Worms
  • Ants
  • Termites
  • Grubs
  • Pillbugs/Potato Bugs
  • Earwigs
  • Maggots
  • Many, many others

Yes, you can eat pretty much any bug. There are even many species of spider, scorpion, and dragonfly you can eat. You pretty much just need to stay away from the pests that feed on human or animal waste, since they are more likely to have harmful bacteria on their skin. It is also a good idea to stay away from any poisonous pests, although there are ways to eat them as well if you’re really hungry.

Now, with that in mind, it’s probably a good idea not to pop on in your mouth raw. You don’t know where those things have been. But you can boil some of them, toast others, and probably roast a few over an open fire if you’re feeling the need.
