What Happens if Pests Are In Your Car?

We usually think of pests as something that only affect our houses. But, in rare cases, it’s possible to get a pest infestation in your car. Everything from ants to cockroaches – even bed bugs – can enter cars and potentially lead to bites, discomfort, and potentially illness.

Many pests can simply be squished and removed. If you have a spider in your car, for example, rather than light your car on fire you can simply squish the spider (or, if you’re feeling squeamish, spray it with Windex) and the spider will die.

But other pests represent more significant problems, and in some cases you may even need an experienced pest control company to help.

Problem Pests in Cars

Most pests in car only find there way inside temporarily or by accident. But some can represent more significant challenges. These include:

  • Ants – Ants won’t live inside of the car, but if they find food in a car they will create a trail that other ants will follow. If this has happened to you, you’ll want to clean the car, eliminate the ants inside of the vehicle, and get a car wash to wipe away any scent. You may also want to consider parking further away for a while, because if you drive back to the same parking structure, there’s a chance the ants will re-create the line.
  • Carpet Beetles – Carpet beetles can be extremely problematic to find inside of a car, as they can typically feed and breed for months. These will usually require a professional treatment, but you can try removing them by replacing the foot mats and other materials that they feed on with something they cannot eat, like plastic.
  • Bed Bugs – Bed bugs do not need to live near beds to thrive, and their ability to hide means they can live inside of a car for years before they’re caught. Bed bugs will always require a professional treatment, as they cannot be eliminated with any DIY household method.

There are other pests that you may find as well. Cockroaches, for example, love to live in cars if they have access to food. Some can be removed by squishing them, but others may require professional assistance.
